Attendance and Guidelines

This is the class meetings for 2025.

Attendance

To receive credit you cannot miss more than 6 days in a semester class or 12 in a year long class. If you go above these numbers you will have to request a waiver.

You must turn in excuses within two days to the office.

Three tardies in a class will be counted as an absence (this includes sign-outs).

Parent notes only count for the first 10 absences of the year, not the semester.

 

Tardy Policy

Students late for class will receive the following consequences:

3 tardies means: Your guardian will be called and told that “you now have an absence in your class because you have too many tardies, and you will have after school detention the next time you receive a tardy”.

You will receive after school detention for every tardy you get after your 3rd tardy to class.

3 tardies to a class constitutes one absence in that class.

Waivers will be given based on the following criteria:

Exam Exemption

Any student with an 80 or higher that has missed 6 or fewer days, can be exempted from a non-state issued final exam.

You can still take the exam, but it won’t hurt your grade.

 

Afterthoughts

Meets in various locations at 3:15 - 4:15

Can make up work or time, and possibly get extra help

Begins mid-September and will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays

You can make up for time you haven’t yet missed, but you must be working in Afterthoughts

 

Exit/Promotion Standards

Sophomore – Requires 6 credits including English I and a math class. Sophomores must take 8 classes each year.

Junior – Requires 12 credits including English I and II and 2 math courses.

Senior – Requires 20 credits including English I, II, and III, 2 math courses. Seniors must take 8 courses unless they have early release or early graduation.

Students are required to complete 28 credits to graduate from Crest High School.

 

Signing in and out of School

Any time you are late to school or need to leave school for any reason you must sign in or out at the main office. If you step on campus, you are considered here at school. If you leave, you will be suspended for two days on the first offense.

If you plan to sign out early, bring a note from a parent and turn it into the front office before 8:00 a.m. (Mrs. Cash)

Once you are at school (parking lot, bus, etc) you are required to sign out before leaving.

Failure to follow the sign in/out procedures will result in 2 days OSS (out of school suspension).

 

Communicating Threats

Any threats made to Crest High School will result in a long-term suspension minimally.

 

Cell Phones and Headphones

NO

It is a state LAW

1st offense - warning

2nd offense - ISS

3rd and beyond - OSS

 

Fighting

Fighting at school will result in a minimum of 3 days OSS (out-of-school suspension) and possible law enforcement involvement

If you are involved in a second fight at school, you will be subject to long term suspension for the remainder of the school year and charges will be filed.

Videoing a fight will result in minimum of 3 days OSS

 

Use of Tobacco

The use of tobacco is prohibited at all Cleveland County School locations

The use of tobacco on campus will result in minimally ISS. Possibly more……..

Any form of e-cigarette or vapor pen is included in this policy

 

Drugs and Alcohol

Possession of drugs or alcohol at school will result in 10 days OSS (out of school suspension) on the first offense and 10 days OSS and a possibility of long term suspension
for the remainder of the school year on the second offense.

This includes being under the influence of any substance that alters the student’s mood or behavior

Distribution (sharing) of drugs or alcohol will result in 10 days OSS and a recommendation of long term suspension for the remainder of the year on the first offense

Possession or distribution includes any and all types of drugs (illegal, prescription, over the counter, etc)

Dab Pens (Wax Pens) are included in this as well.

 

Weapons

Possession or use of a weapon will result in 10 days OSS (out-of-school suspension) and possibly long term suspension for the remainder of the year as well as charges being filed.

No type of weapon is allowed on school property

If you accidentally bring a pocket knife or sharp object to school, please let us know and turn it into the front office.

If a weapon is found in a bag, on a person, or a vehicle it is too late to turn it in.

 

Driving Eligibility

NC law mandates students maintain adequate progress toward graduation in order to remain eligible to hold a valid driver’s permit or driver’s license.

Students who are 15 - 17 years old are at risk of losing their permit or license if they do not receive credit for at least 3 out of 4 classes each semester.

In order to have your license reinstated, students must pass 3 out of 4 classes and visit the DMV to have the license reinstated.

 

Dress Code

Hats & hoods - no hats/no hoods/no head coverings inside school buildings (outside of shop areas)

No ski masks or full face coverings

No bedroom slippers and no bedroom shoes

Undergarments may not be exposed

No spaghetti strap tops, must be a minimum of 2 fingers wide on shoulder.

Shirts worn with leggings must cover “everything”

Shirts must appropriately cover abdomen and chest completely (no cleavage & no cut out shirts).

Clothing must not be see through

Consequences:

Teacher must submit a referral for each dress code violation (minor incident) and the student must correct the violation or go to chill out until corrected

The violation is treated just like any other minor and will receive disciplinary action accordingly

 

Field Trips

Before a student will be allowed to miss any class time for a field trip, they must be in good academic standing.

If a student has below a C average in a class, they cannot attend without teacher permission.

If a student has more than 10 absences, they cannot attend.

ALL fees must be paid before you can go on a field trip.

 

Medications at School

No student is allowed to carry any medications with him/her during the school day except for emergency medications (such as inhalers, epi-pens, diabetic supplies) which require a
doctor’s order. Should a student require meds at school the following steps must be followed:

Secure the necessary forms from the office.

Have the doctor fill out the form completely.

The form must be signed by a parent authorizing office personnel to give the medication.

The medication is to be brought to the high school by a parent or other responsible adult in the original unopened pharmacy container and delivered directly to the office.
